As well as a helpful and supportive member community, there are 18 exercises (and growing) with over 30 video demonstrations designed to help you develop very specific skills.
The initial exercises are all about helping you get a regular drawing habit established. Starting small, and without any pressure, you’ll learn how to build a drawing habit into your day – and sustain it over the long term.
Once the habit starts to develop, there are some simple, low pressure exercises designed to improve your focus and your control of different materials. These exercises, called Breathing Lines, are a meditative approach to drawing that are also very effective as a warm up to a drawing or painting session.
Design and composition
There is a great emphasis on foundational design skills – which translate directly into picture making – in Creative Triggers. Too often, realist artists develop technical skill without learning the art of making beautiful pictures with those skills.
A series of logically progressing design exercises will help you develop your compositional skills. Here’s an example of a video from this section of the exercises:
The key to bringing your paintings and drawings to life, to creating a feeling of light, depth and three dimensional form, value is one of the most important of skills to develop in order to create realistic art.
Starting simply, this series of exercises are developing into an in-depth treatment of value that will allow you to create convincing and beautiful paintings and drawings. Never struggle with value again.
Following on from the value exercises, colour exercises will be added later this year, showing you how to accurately judge and then mix any colour you see.
Monthly Drawing Challenges
As well as the exercises, we also have a regular monthly drawing challenge. Members pick a theme, and contribute drawings through the month. We’ve had design themes, a subject theme of irises, gesture drawing, drawing in cafes and more. These are some of the most fun things we do at Creative Triggers.
